92. Was (Not Was), What Up, Dog? (Chrysalis, 1988)

First thing you should know about this Detroit collective is that they kept re-recording a theme song of sorts called “Out Come The Freaks” on most of their albums. A few selections from this gonzo patchwork quilt haven’t aged all that well (particularly the yuppie funk of actual novelty hit “Walk The Dinosaur”), but enough inspired weirdness remains. Frank Sinatra Jr. (as opposed to the actual Chairman Of the Board) is still a perfect choice for “Wedding Vows In Vegas”, I still get a chuckle out of the surreal grotesques of “Earth To Doris” and the title track, and then there’s the absolutely krraazzyy “Dad I’m In Jail”, which still seems like it wickedly wandered its way off a Butthole Surfers album. Wouldn’t you love to have vocalists Sweet Pea Atkinson and Sir Harry Bowens in your band?
